Thanasis Mavrokostas was born in 1983 and comes from Anogeia, Crete. He is a distinguished Cretan dancer, musician, and teacher dedicated to preserving and evolving the rich traditions of Cretan culture. Coming from a family with over 47 years of traditional legacy, he continues the work of his father, Dimitris Mavrokostas, a celebrated dancer and pioneer.
Thanasis began his dance journey at the age of six and took up playing Cretan music and singing during his teenage years. He graduated from the Philosophy Department at the University of Rethymnon, where he merges academic knowledge with artistic skill in his teaching and performances. He operates his own dance school in Heraklion, where he teaches students the art of Cretan dance and music.
Thanasis has conducted dance seminars internationally, including in Athens, Thessaloniki, Cyprus, New Jersey, Paris, Brussels, Morocco, Finland, and Wales. His performances with the “MAVROKOSTAS” dance group have reached audiences worldwide, including major U.S. cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, and New York, as well as renowned venues like the Lycabettus Theater, Herodion, Olympic Stadium in Athens, Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, and stages throughout Greece. As one of the original members of the Cretan Quartet, he was the solo dancer at prestigious international venues including Carnegie Hall, becoming the first Cretan dancer to perform there, as well as Palais de France in Paris, and representing Crete at the WOMEX festival in Cardiff, Wales.
A versatile and talented musician Thanasis is proficient in the Cretan lyra, Cretan cello, mandolin, and Cretan bagpipe (mandoura). He has released six personal CDs and a DVD devoted to Cretan music and dance and continues to educate numerous music students.
Thanasis continues to research, honor, and expand the traditions of Cretan music and dance, sharing his expertise and passion with students and audiences globally. At Klironomia 2026, he will be teaching dances from Anogeia with his focus on male solos.
