Agisilaos Kampourakis was born in 1969 in Kalymnos, Greece, into a family of renowned sponge divers and ship captains. Immersed from childhood in the island’s seafaring traditions and vibrant community life, he began his journey in dance in 1983 with the Lykeion Ellinidon of Kalymnos. What began as a youthful passion grew into a lifelong devotion to Greek traditional dance, as both a performer and a teacher. Today he is a teacher and mentor in Ilia, Achaia.
Over the years, Agisilaos has taken part in numerous landmark performances that celebrate the cultural heritage of Kalymnos. He appeared as a lead dancer in the 1991 Athens Festival at the Herodeion, presenting “The Wedding Ritual” on behalf of the Dodecanese, and in 2002 he performed in “The Sea” with the Lykeion Ellinidon of Kalymnos. His commitment to preserving and showcasing Kalymnian tradition has also taken him abroad, with performances in Venice, Spain, and Portugal that introduced international audiences to the island’s unique identity.
Having trained from a young age alongside some of Kalymnos’s most respected and esteemed traditional dancers, Agisilaos has participated in hundreds of local festivals and community celebrations, dancing at gatherings that remain central to the island’s cultural life. A dedicated student of the traditional “Michanikos” dance, created by the late Theofilos Klonaris, Agisilaos continues to honor his roots while mentoring and inspiring the next generation of dancers.
Alongside his artistic pursuits, Agisilaos has built a distinguished professional career as a Mechanical Engineer. He has served in the Hellenic Air Force since 1994 and, since 2000, has worked as an inspector of structural technical works on F-4E PHANTOM aircraft.
Today, Agisilaos remains a respected figure within the Greek dance community, admired for his skill, leadership, and unwavering commitment to preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of Kalymnos.
